Music Facts: Dance/Electronic

• Electronic music first began in the 1920s, but hit the mainstream in the 1970s, with disco, EDM and other genres. 

• Decades ago, disco music became a refuge for listeners – particularly Black, Latinx and queer audiences. 

• Recent dance music GRAMMY winners include Skrillex, Diplo, and Dua Lipa. 

• At the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2021, Kaytrananda became the first Black artist to win a GRAMMY for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
